Seasonal Tips
The way you treat your plumbing should actually change based on the season. Here we have some easy maintenance tips for all seasons of the year!
Spring
-
Check faucets for drips or leaks
-
Ensure all drains have strainers to catch debris
-
Check toilets for hidden leaks – add six drops of food coloring to the toilet tank. If your toilet is leaking you will see color in the bowl within 30 minutes
-
Clean mineral deposits from showerheads by soaking in vinegar overnight
-
Run the dishwasher or washing machine at night to conserve water
-
Drain several gallons from the water heater tank to flush out corrosion-causing sediment
Summer
-
Check exposed piping for leaks
-
Survey cabinets and flooring for leaks. Small leaks in the Summer can become big issues once colder weather arrives
-
Replace water heaters that are over 10 years old. Newer, energy efficient water heaters can save money and quickly recoup their cost
Fall
-
Disconnect outside water hoses
-
Make sure outside faucets aren’t dripping or leaking
-
Close shut-off valves to outside faucets if available
-
Cover outside faucets
-
Insulate piped in unheated areas
-
Flush out water heaters in preparation for colder months
-
Drain your plumbing when leaving your home for an extended period of time. Stagnant water in pipes can easily freeze
Winter
-
Avoid dumping excess grease and potato peels from holiday meals down the drain or disposal
-
Run cold water down the drain for 15 seconds before and after using the garbage disposal to flush waste completely down
-
Plan ahead to spread out showers, washing machine, dishwasher, and other household appliances to reduce strain on your water heater
